Black Jade & Antique Ojime Rope Necklace
One-of-a-kind silver and akagane antique ojime with back-to-back images of Buddhist saints: one serious and holding a rosary, one laughing and holding a tickling stick. Ojime dates back to 19th century Japan. In order to carry their personal effects, men would attach a bag or box from a cord on their kimono sash, using an ojime to secure the contents inside. Believed to possess magical properties and often worn as talismans, they were enviable status symbols, giving prestige to those who wore them. Black nephrite jade, 10mm. Antique Japanese ojime. 36"L continuous.
