Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1864) was a Japanese artist known for his woodblock prints in the ukiyo-e style, similar to his contemporaries Ando Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai. One of the most successful artists of his lifetime, Kunisada explored traditional themes, such as Kabuki Theater, samurai, and sumo wrestling. In this tryptich — originally created in1844 — the artist represents courtisans on the banks of the Sumida river, which runs through Tokyo.
