This Victorian pendant reflects the symbolism of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, a fraternal organization founded in 1868 in New York City, and known for its charitable mission and ritual tradition. The elk tooth — highly prized by members in the late 19th century — signified fraternity and was often worn as a badge of honor. The blue enamel clock face set to eleven o’clock references the Order’s “Eleven O’Clock Toast,” a nightly tribute to absent brothers, while “Cervus Alces,” the Latin name for elk, underscores the emblematic animal at the heart of the society. The number 3, prominently displayed, alludes to the Order’s structure, with the organization operating on three distinct levels: National (Grand Lodge), State and Local. Rich in iconography and craftsmanship, the piece serves as both jewel and historical artifact of American fraternal culture.
